Jesse Jackson Jr. a Democratic Representative from the U.S. House of Representatives has resigned his House seat. Jackson Jr. has been receiving treatment for bipolar disorder and now is reportedly being investigated for allegedly misusing campaign funds.
The Democrat from Chicago said in his letter to John Boehner the U.S. Speaker of the House that his health issues and regimen of treatment have become so much that he cannot service any longer in the House of Representatives. Therefore, he wrote that it was with a great deal of regret that he had to resign. His resignation was effective immediately, as he wanted to focus on restoring his health.
Jackson Jr. is the 47-year-old son of Reverend Jesse Jackson the well known and respected civil rights leader and a one time presidential candidate. Jackson Jr. also admitted that he had made his share of errors.
He also mentioned in the letter that he was aware of a federal investigation that was ongoing in reference to his activities and he was doing all he could to address that, he is cooperating with the investigations and will accept all responsibility for his mistakes as they are his mistakes and his alone.
Jackson Jr. has been a member of Congress for 17 years and won easily in his re-election bid in a heavily Democratic area on November 6, despite his ethics questions lingering over him and his ailments. The political balance is not expected to change because of his resignation, as the Republicans already have control of the House.
