For the third consecutive weekend, The Dark Knight Rises has topped the box office ranking after earning $36.4 million. Christopher Nolan’s finale of the epic trilogy of Batman now has earned closed to $335 million in just North America.
Second place at the weekend box office was the new version of Total Recall that stars Colin Farrell. The action thriller was a remake of the 1990 action adventure that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. The latest version took in just over $26 million over the weekend. Debuting at number three over the weekend was Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, which was produced by the Fox family. The comedy earned $14.7 million.
The finale of Batman dropped just 41% from its second weekend total, while it predecessor The Dark Knight fell 43% in 2008 during its third weekend. Warner Bros. also said the movie is back on track following the tragic massacre that took place one day prior to the nationwide release of the movie in a midnight screening of the film. Executives at Warner Bros. said the audience support across the country has been tremendous.
The movie has set a new record at IMAX, with close to $48 million of the gross of the film coming from the huge screen format. Nolan shot over 40% of the movie on IMAX, with the idea of it being projected in that format.
A number of analysts were surprised the movie held up so well during the third weekend. They said that word of mouth has fueled sales for the movie and many people have returned to see the movie multiple times.
