Jaguars fall flat against Jets; McCown finds way into record book

JACKSONVILLE — If what you saw on television wasn’t enough to tell you Luke McCown had a bad game against the Jets, the numbers certainly will.

In completing 6 of 19 passes for 59 yards and throwing four interceptions, starting quarterback (for now) Luke McCown found his way into the Jaguars record book.

McCown officially had the worst game for a starting quarterback in Jaguars history, posting a passer rating of 1.8.

The Jaguars’ previous low was 11.1, earned by Quinn Gray in a 29-7 loss against Indianapolis in 2007.

Here are the top 5 worst performances by Jaguars starting quarterbacks in team history (minimum of 10 attempts):

Blaine Gabbert’s decent performance in fourth quarter mop-up duty begs the question: When will the Gabbert era begin? Or has it begun already? Although Gabbert performed well (5/6, 52 yards), he failed to lead the Jaguars on a scoring drive, and he was primarily playing against a softened Jets defense protecting a commanding lead.

All indications prior to this week’s shellacking indicate Gabbert, who’s just three years removed from high school, simply isn’t ready to take on a starting role.

Luke McCown’s performance Sunday may push him into that role quicker than the front office anticipated.

After two weeks, McCown is also the NFL’s lowest-rated starting quarterback (30.6), and the only starting QB in the NFL yet to complete a pass of 30 yards or more:
